Suggested by Stacey, who wanted places the locals haven't seen. Fisher Oak Savanna is about 8 miles from Remington, north of Wolcott in Jasper County, and almost nobody goes. NICHES Land Trust protects black oak savanna on old dune ridges, pin oak flatwoods, sand prairie and a wet black-soil prairie. Orange fringed orchids bloom here in summer, and part of it is a dedicated state nature preserve.

Best in the last hour of daylight, when the sun comes in sideways through the open oaks. The preserve closes at dusk, so plan to be walking back as the sun sets. Times here are Central.

Free. Open dawn to dusk, December through October; NICHES closes its preserves for all of November for a deer-control hunt. There are no restrooms. Keep dogs leashed if you bring them. No picnics in the dedicated preserve, and take nothing. The trails are low and flat, with wet spots in spring. Wear long pants and check for ticks afterward. On early-summer evenings, keep an eye out for real fireflies over the prairie on your way out.

Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
