Ghost Town & Bison: Conrad Station and Kankakee Sands

Foundations of a vanished railroad town on the dunes, a picnic, then bison from a sand-dune overlook.

North of Remington, The Nature Conservancy has brought back the prairie at Kankakee Sands. At Conrad Station Savanna, a mowed loop wanders over black-oak sand dunes past the foundations of Conrad, a railroad town founded by Jennie Conrad that lasted about 30 years. Then the bison: about 100 of them roam roughly 1,100 acres, and you can watch from a dune overlook called Bogus Island.

Best in the afternoon, with Conrad first and the bison as the day cools, since they often gather near the water. The bison area closes at sunset. Times here are Central.

Free. Conrad Station is open dawn to dusk; the bison viewing area is open 7 a.m. to sunset. Leashed pets are allowed. Picnicking is allowed at the preserve's sheltered area; ask at the office on US 41. No collecting, biking, camping or drones. Never enter the bison pasture: bison are wild, fast and dangerous, and the fence is electric. Use the boot-brush station at Conrad so you don't spread weed seeds. Watch for hunting seasons and prescribed-burn closures. Long pants for ticks.

Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
