Dark Sky Night at Jasper-Pulaski
Sign in, turn off the car, and let the marsh country show you the stars.
Play this quest in ShenanigoMost parks and preserves around here close at dusk, but Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area is open 24 hours, so you can legally be there after dark. The open marshes and farm fields north of Medaryville make for big, dark skies, and in fall the sandhill cranes call from their roosts after sunset.
Best on a clear, moonless night, starting an hour after sunset. The crane platform is in Pulaski County on Eastern time, an hour ahead of Remington.
Free, but every visitor must sign in for a free one-day access permit before going onto the property, whatever they are doing, and drop it in the return box on the way out. Stay at the crane observation platform and its parking area: the refuge areas are posted no trespassing, access lanes are foot traffic only, and camping and fires are not allowed. Leashed dogs only. Bring a red flashlight, warm layers and a friend. Hunting seasons run through fall and winter (2026 deer firearms season is Nov 14-29), so wear orange if you arrive before dark, and watch for vehicles in the lot.
Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
