Clegg Memorial Garden Morning
Stairs down to Wildcat Creek, oak woods and hill prairie, ten minutes from Lafayette and a world away.
Play this quest in ShenanigoHarold and Ruth Clegg bought these wooded hills above Wildcat Creek in the late 1930s, and in 1965 their family opened them to the public in memory of their son, Jerry. Today NICHES Land Trust cares for the garden: about 17 acres of oak woodland, gravel hill prairie and savanna, with more than a mile of looping trail, many stairs and about 100 feet of climb from the creek to the hilltop.
Best in the morning, with birdsong in the woods, soft light on the creek and quiet trails.
Free. Open daily until dusk (check NICHES for any November closure). There are no restrooms, so carry out all your trash. Stay on the trails, because the soils are fragile. The stairs are steep and can be slick with leaves, and the creek bank is steep. Save the picnic for a city park; this is a walking place.
Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
