Harrisburgh to Brownsburg: A Downtown History Walk
A town that changed its name, a racing broadcaster, a beam from New York and Brownsburg’s oldest park.
Play this quest in ShenanigoJames B. Brown settled here in 1824. In 1835 William Harris laid out a town at what is now Main and Green Streets and called it Harrisburgh, but when the post office opened in 1836, Indiana already had a Harrisburgh, so the town became Brownsburgh. The "h" finally fell off in 1893.
This walk starts at that corner and heads north along Green Street: Town Hall, the racing markers of the Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail, the 9/11 memorial at Arbuckle Commons, 52-acre Arbuckle Acres Park, and the White Lick Creek Greenway. About 1.5 miles, 1.5 to 2 hours.
Best in the morning, when the park paths are quiet and cool. Cross Green Street (State Road 267) only at crosswalks and signals: it is the busiest road in town. Brownsburg parks and trails are open 5 a.m. to dusk, and dogs are welcome on a short leash.
Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
