New Palestine’s Main Street is an old state road. Drive five miles west to the marker that tells its story.

Main Street in New Palestine is US 52, and a few miles west the same highway still carries its old name, Brookville Road. A state historical marker by the road tells how Indiana authorized it at the very end of 1821, and how for years it was the main way to haul goods and people between Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Taverns fed travelers on trips that took days.

A short driving quest: start downtown, drive about 5 miles west on US 52 (around 7 minutes), read the marker, and imagine the trip by wagon.

The marker is on the north side of US 52 just east of Whispering Drive, at a pull-off. Park in the pull-off, never on the highway shoulder, and watch for trucks when you get out. Passengers read the phone; drivers drive.

Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
