Schramm Woods at First Light

A 31-acre island of old woods in the farm fields north of town, and a quiet loop as the birds wake up.

Jacob Schramm Nature Preserve is a 31-acre patch of mature forest that seems to rise straight out of the surrounding fields north of New Palestine, protected since 1999. It is owned by the Hancock County Community Foundation and cared for with the Central Indiana Land Trust. An easy 0.6-mile loop wanders under basswood, beech, hornbeam, shagbark hickory, slippery elm, sugar maple and sycamore, and in spring wildflowers cover the forest floor.

Best right at sunrise, when the preserve opens and the woods are loud with birds. About an hour.

Open dawn to dusk, and for feet only: no bikes. Leashed dogs are welcome. Stay on the trail, take nothing (not a flower, nut, mushroom or stick), no cooking or fires, and carry out your trash. Groups of 10 or more should contact the land trust first. Park in the marked lot off S 600 W and don't wander onto the neighboring private land.

Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
