Sam Rice grew up near Morocco, survived a family tragedy in the 1912 tornado, and became a Washington Senators legend with 2,987 hits. Twenty minutes north, a herd of about 100 bison roams the Kankakee Sands prairie (they arrived in 2016). And Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area wraps around J.C. Murphey Lake.

Bison viewing is free, 7 a.m. to sunset. Stay out of the pasture. About 35 miles from Remington.

Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
