Eight Columns, Thirty Tons
A deep dive into the Boone County Courthouse and the giant one-piece columns that hold it up.
Play this quest in ShenanigoThe Boone County Courthouse went up between 1909 and 1911 from plans by architect Joseph T. Hutton. Its porticoes stand on eight one-piece Bedford limestone columns, each about 35 feet tall and roughly 30 tons, long billed as the largest single-piece columns in the country. Above them is a 52-foot stained-glass dome.
A short, dense quest around the lawn: the columns, the dome, and three memorials. About 40 minutes.
Play safe: stay on public sidewalks and grounds, respect private property, and never read your phone while driving.
